The core gameplay is really outdated and boring. ![]() While the latter is super frustrating, nice to look at but with clunky gameplay and mechanics. I beat Mr Shifty and am almost done with Wonder Boy, which game did I have more pure fun with? Easily the former, even with its rough edges, it has gameplay that I want to see expanded on and enhanced. Its way more gratifying to live this way. I don't care if others like these things, if it looks like I will find it entertaining, then I'm going to roll the dice. Same with Batman v Superman, Warcraft movie, Overwatch, Doom, and now I have pre orders for Prey and Little Nightmares. I knew I'd have fun with this game and bought it day one. Over the last year or two I went from the guy who would check all reviews before a purchase to the guy who will purchase something day one if it looked fun or interesting to 'me', the person spending my money. Being able to move throughout stages undetected should be implemented as an interesting stealth mechanic, a la the Dishonored franchise for example, but is instead used as a combat gimmick.įunny most negative comments are from people who never played it. This is all well and good, but the core mechanic of shifting is almost completely wasted on this basic objective. While there are some missions that require you to find an item or survive an onslaught of enemies and environmental traps, the primary goal is almost always to kill all of the baddies to unlock the door to the next area. One of our bigger gripes with this game – outside of its performance – is the lack of variety throughout its 18 stages. For how well it controls, it's a real shame that this game performs poorly on the hardware. This is all covered in the first stage that acts as an extended tutorial, but mastering the controls is exceedingly easy and the combat flows well once you've got the hang of it. Shifty this dot can be teleported to by tapping B. There is a small dot that works as a reticle constantly floating in front of Mr. You can pick up weapons by pressing A, while punches and projectiles are thrown with Y. Movement is tied to the left stick or D-Pad and the right stick is used to pan the camera and explore your environment. Shifty is how well the game plays when it successfully reaches full flow. Being able to disappear and reappear on the other side of a wall directly behind an enemy before taking them down is a deeply satisfying, and it works well with the game's simple control scheme. It's a powerful ability that dynamically changes how you explore stages and really opens the game up. The major difference is your titular character's ability to "shift," causing him to disappear and reappear about five feet away. ![]() What we have here is a top down action title that allows you to pick up weapons and use environmental hazards to take down your foes. Shifty without making direct comparisons to Hotline Miami. The plot doesn't get much deeper than that, but the character dialogue is funny enough to keep it entertaining, and it sets the gameplay in motion. The premise revolves around a heist as you attempt to break into a high security skyscraper and steal something called Mega Plutonium to stop an evil plan. Shifty has the framework of a very interesting and enjoyable game. Technical problems - and their notable impact on gameplay - aside, Mr. Shifty does not perform well on Nintendo Switch in its original form, with the developer promising an update that, at the time of publication a week+ after release, is yet to roll out. We tested the game both docked and in handheld mode and found similar results. It might be unrelated, but the game also managed to crash twice in our review period. ![]() During later stages that are filled with enemies and hazards the framerate has a tendency to come to a screeching halt, skipping chunks of the action and often resulting in player deaths. ![]()
